Salvatore Tomaselli

Expert in Family Business Governance and Strategy. Professor of Business Administration and Family Business, University of Palermo

Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Palermo, he teaches Business Administration, Family Business Strategy and Governance, and Planning and Control Systems. In 2015 he was visiting professor of Family Business Strategy and Governance at the Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China, where he has been Adjunct Professor since November 2021. He was visiting professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, for the period 2017-2023.

A Philosophy Doctor in Business Administration from IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain, Salvatore is Certified Lego Serious Play Facilitator, he holds certifications in Steering Complex Projects (Cambridge University) and Mastering Design Thinking (MIT).

He is a Founding member and fellow of the Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA) - of which he was a member of the Board from the Foundation until 2011, and a member of FFI. He was Vice President, Delegate for Finance of the EURAM Board from 2015 to 2017.

He is frequently invited as a speaker at international conferences, workshops and seminars.

In 2016, he was co-opted as an Ordinary Member of the Real Academia Europea de Doctores (http://raed.eu), Barcelona, Spain.

He has worked as reviewer for international academic journals such as Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research. He is a member of the editorial board of familybusiness.org.

In 1993 and 1999 he received the FBN Award for the best research paper presented at the FBN Annual World Conference.

From 2005 to 2014 he was a partner of the "Family Business Consulting Group Costa España". From 2015 to 2018 he was Advisor to IFC International Finance Corporation – World Bank Group for consultancy in the Family Business Strategy & Governance area. From 2017 to 2019 Senior Consultant of "The FBCG" (Family Business Consulting Group). Co-founder and partner of "Family Business Asesores Costa Rica", founded in 2014.

Salvatore has assisted numerous family businesses and entrepreneurial families in Europe, Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina), Asia (China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Taiwan), Middle East (Jordan), South Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Ivory Coast), Australia, in areas such as:

  • Planning of generational transition processes in the management and ownership of the Family Company;
  • Governance and Management of the Family Business;
  • Assistance in the insertion of the following generation in the company: design of training courses aimed at acquiring the skills useful for a profitable insertion in the family business, mentoring, tutoring;
  • Permanent training of the family structure to a healthy and responsible interaction with the family business and its governing and management bodies;
  • Strategic parallel planning;
  • Assistance in the drafting of vision / mission / values statements;
  • Assistance in the design of Family governance  structures (Family Council, Family Assembly;
  • Policy design assistance (i.e., hiring, communication, dividends, liquidity, etc.);
  • Assistance in the design and drafting of codes of conduct, family agreements, family constitutions, family agreements;
  • Assistance in the design and implementation of corporate governance systems and structures;
